Manual
Transfer Switch Installation for a Generator:
The transfer or changeover switch is fitted between mains input to
your distribution (fuse / consumer unit) board. The meter tails
supplying power to your board are redirected via the transfer
switch.
Briggs & Stratton BST9200M* Transfer Switch
Supplied and installed from £425.00
The switch has a 3-position function; Generator Supply - Off - Mains
Supply
The switch is normally left in the Mains Supply position and power
from your utility company is maintained.
Further wiring is needed from the transfer switch to an inlet
connector, this is simply a male socket which is usually fitted on
an outside wall. (if a permanently fixed generator the inlet
connector may not be needed)
The switch can be installed prior to buying / renting a generator.
The transfer switch is rated at either 100 or 80 amps for utility
supply so the normal power is unaffected. When under generator
supply the power is limited to 35 amps or thereabouts. In the event
of a power cut this is adequate for most domestic / small business
situations for emergency backup.
When you have a generator, you simply plug the generator into the
inlet connector. Start the generator. Then turn the transfer switch
to Generator Supply, power is then restored.
Suitable leads can be provided to connect the genset to the inlet
connector.
When normal power is restored, turn the transfer switch to Mains
Supply, stop the generator, then unplug the lead and store in a dry
place.
For safety reasons, it is important to follow the sequences given.
If you have space, it is more convenient to have the generator set
in a fixed position, then the genset can be left permanently
connected.
A transfer switch can also be used to power dedicated circuits only,
rather than a full installation; however this would mean alterations
to your existing distribution board set-up.
