Example Generator Housing

Roof, concrete or soundproofed plywood. Floor concrete. Walls brick or concrete blocks.

Front Elevation

Rear Elevation air flow vents

Side Elevation 1 *cooling vent

Side Elevation 2 exhaust vents

*louvered cooling vent

The generator radiator should be in line with the cooling vent. (assuming a water   cooled  generator engine)

The generator exhaust should be in line with at least one exhaust vent.

Problems! yes, giving good air flow undermines soundproofing. But the generator must  have good air flow for generator longevity and optimum performance, not to mention  safety implications, poisonous gasses etc. However, this can be overcome by correct positioning of the housing, where one full side of the housing has no vents, (normally the doors side). This side should face the area where soundproofing is paramount. A modern diesel generator for backup residential power are quiet (they are not silent as some manufactures claim) As a guide about the same noise as a modern car at tick-over. With a good housing at say 10 mtrs from your house, you will not be able to hear it.

As a guide only: Depending on generator manufacturer.
A genset giving 5Kw will roughly need a minimum enclosure 2 metres long by 1.5  metres wide by 1 metre high. (internal measurement)

The generator/housing must be situated away from windows and or air conditioning  inlets.

To give aesthetic appeal the housing should compliment the surrounding area. This is especially true for rural areas, where the housing can be built of stone or block built and clad with timber shiplap or similar.

I would advise emergency lighting within the generator enclosure for obvious reasons, this will of course incur further cost, but the extra costs are worthwhile, especially if you are utilizing a manual start generator. Try refuelling in the dark, or trying to refuel with a torch in your hand...or just locating buttons to start. The genset engine must be off for refuel. However emergency lighting will still be available.

This is optional but it is a very worthwhile consideration for residential back up generators, it is an absolute must in industry.
