Standby electric generators
Emergency backup
Generators can be portable or fixed (standby). A standby generator
is permanently connected to your mains supply via a transfer switch.
The generator can be started automatically or manually with a key
switch.
A portable generator has to be wheeled out of storage manually
started (either recoil or electric) and connected via an inlet
connector to your electricity distribution point, again a transfer
switch is usually required.
Generally, the portable set has a far shorter run time and needs
refuelling 4 - 5 times a day. Also the power output capability will
be less.
Standby systems for homes or small business offer the best option
but they are more expensive.
